Integration of Green Transport in Cities / Green Inter-e-Mobility

Project funded by INTERREG IPA CBC Programme “Greece – Republic of Noth Macedonia 2014-2020”

Period of implementation: September 2021 – August 2023

The main objective of the Green Inter-e-Mobility project is to design and apply an energy-efficient, regional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in four (4) cross-border municipalities in Greece (Florina and Prespes) and in North Macedonia (Bitola and Resen). The ITS will support the efficient realization of both the tourist promotion of the cross-border area and the facilitation of disabled or elder residents in their daily transport.

The realization of the above objective resulted in the following:
– The purchasing of four (4) electric minibusses and four (4) utility cars that will transfer tourists and students on the routes that will be defined, as well as residents, especially elderly, disabled, and distant residents, on-demand.
– Four Renewable Energy Sources (RES) powered charging stations for electrical vehicles installed on public parking lots.
– An intelligent transportation client-server system based on a smartphone app developed.
– An optimal route scheduling for transporting tourists, students, disabled or elderly people, and municipal administration with a forecast over a 20-year horizon.

GAUSS Institute was a subcontractor to Municipality Bitola and Municipality Resen (Republic of North Macedonia) responsible for developing a

  • A functional communication system that includes a technical solution, equipment, installation, and implementation of software for communication between two electric vehicles and users
  • Optimal route scheduling for transporting tourists, students, disabled or elderly people, and municipal administration with a forecast over a 20-year horizon.
  • Pilot implementation of the ITS and analysis of the pilot’s environmental and financial benefits.

The implemented communication system consists of three components:

1. System for monitoring car condition. Technical equipment and an Android application are connected to the cars via a wireless Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi connection.

2. Smart transport information system. It is a web (server) application that wirelessly (through 4G) communicates with the cars and schedules driving and charging.

3. Citizen Information system—web and mobile app. Through the Information System, citizens can see the availability of electric cars and reserve one for allowed use according to the policies of the Municipalities of Bitola and Resen.

GAUSS Institute was also responsible for the pilot implementation of this system and analyzing the results of that implementation.
